The Really Real Story of "Little" Anthony
Rose City History with a dash of Mystery
In 1890, a sky-scraping (3-story) building was born, creating a home to the Osborn Hotel at SE Grand Avenue & Ash Street in Portland. It was a modern, elegant beauty standing proudly in the bustling trolley-line on the east side of the Willamette. The Osborn shifted gears from serving primarily wealthy travelers, to accommodate soldiers during WWI. Unfortunately, a fiery disaster struck the stately hotel in early 1917, burning it almost to the foundation. Fortunately for us, the ownership decided build it back, even nicer than before.
About this time, a young & secretly "family connected" entrepreneur, named Anthony Vincenzo Bellini, migrated out to Portland, Ore. from New York City. Everyone who knew him, called him "Little Antony" because of his diminutive (5', 4") stature, but certainly not as often to his face. Back home, he had "sold-off" his bar & restaurant to the mafia, partially to settle up his gambling debts. He also needed to quickly get out of town. Oregon was going to be Anthony's westward gold rush, where he was seeking to start over.
What Bellini didn't realize is that even though the federal ban on liquor, known to us as the Prohibition, hadn't officially started yet, the state of Oregon had begun it's own local ban in 1916 (four years early). The history on why is almost completely erased, but it is speculated that the state government was aware that the Prohibition was coming & they wanted to get ahead of the backlash prior to it happening to have a better plan in place. Regardless, it was going to be an impossible place for this young man to open a new bar. At least at first glance.
With the newly rebuilt Osborn as the shining bright beacon on Grand, of course Anthony was drawn-in like a moth. As a connected salesman of sorts, he put a little bit of a lean on the hotel owner with an idea that was inspired by a train conductor-turned-speakeasy owner, James "Birdlegs" Reed, who advised Bellini on the "right" way to make a speakeasy work. So, Anthony's first step was to use his connections to provide the Osborn Hotel with quality food, beverage & hospitality products at the "family rate" to sweeten the deal of turning his hotel basement into a speakeasy club. Thus, the original Rose City Social Club was formed.
Our business is proudly carrying on this storied tradition. But whatever you do, just don't tell anyone the secret, unless you can vouch for them.

Rose City Social Club establishes it's roots in an era that has passed by years ago, more specifically, the "roaring" 20's. However, our goal is to not only create an entertaining & immersive experience as a spectator, but to also provide customer service as well as crafted food & beverage that exceeds today's expectations. Rose City wants you to feel special, and even inspired, in everything that we offer.
